On 8 July 2025, the European Parliament adopted a resolution titled “Security of energy supply in the EU” addressing one of Europe’s most pressing priorities: securing a stable, affordable, and sustainable energy supply in an increasingly complex geopolitical and climate landscape.
At ETN Global, we welcome this resolution as a significant step toward building a more resilient European energy system. Many of the priorities outlined reflect principles long championed by our network, particularly those presented in our January 2025 White Paper and the joint ENZA position paper advocating for a technology-inclusive Clean Industrial Deal. These include the urgent need for increased dispatchable power, a technology-neutral approach, and a stronger focus on system-wide resilience.
Below, we highlight the key takeaways most relevant to ETN Global members:
- Rethinking energy security
The resolution calls for a broader and updated understanding of energy security—one that goes beyond affordability and availability to also encompass resilience, sustainability, and geopolitical risks. It urges the EU to enhance coherence, consistency and effectiveness across policymaking. This holistic systems approach is fully aligned with ETN Global’s mission. - Dispatchable capacity recognised as critical
As Europe moves towards a renewables-dominated grid, the importance of firm, flexible capacity becomes urgent. The resolution underlines the need to invest in technologies such as electricity and heat storage, hydrogen, cogeneration, and other clean firm power sources to manage variability and ensure a reliable energy supply. - Respect for national specificities
A successful and just energy transition must recognise that Member States face different challenges and opportunities. The resolution acknowledges this and stresses the need for tailored approaches that reflect local geographical, industrial, and social conditions. This is crucial for developing solutions that are both effective and equitable. - Technology neutrality is essential
The Parliament strongly reaffirms that energy policy should remain technology-neutral, avoiding lock-in effects. It calls for support for a diverse mix of clean technologies, including advanced gas turbines, SMRs, storage, renewables, and efficiency solutions, allowing Member States to select what best suits their needs and capabilities. - Permitting bottlenecks must be addressed
The resolution recognises that lengthy and complex permitting processes are a major barrier to the deployment of critical energy infrastructure. It supports urgent action to simplify and accelerate permitting, particularly for repowering existing sites and new infrastructure, a long-standing concern for ETN Global members.
ETN Global encourages EU policymakers to translate these principles into action and we stand ready to contribute our expertise in flexible, low-carbon, and technology-neutral energy solutions.
