At ASME Turbo Expo 2024 in London, ETN Global hosted a high-profile panel session titled “Turbomachinery Solutions for Decentralised Energy Systems: Addressing Clean, Dispatchable, and Affordable Energy.” The session, moderated by our colleague Giuseppe Tilocca and Managing Director Christer Björkqvist, focused on the evolving role of gas turbines and turbomachinery in ensuring reliable and sustainable energy during the energy transition.

The panel outlined three major strategies to address challenges in decentralised energy systems:

• Fuel flexibility: Developing gas turbines that can run on hydrogen and biofuels.
• Digitalisation: Leveraging advanced digital tools to optimize operations and maintenance.
• Efficiency Improvements: Enhancing turbine performance to lower emissions and operational costs.

The discussion underscored that gas turbines remain crucial for decentralised power generation, offering grid stability, backup power, and renewable integration support. However, panelists also pointed out the need for regulatory support, investment frameworks, and improved fuel availability to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy solutions.
